Ian Appleton

Helen Lucas Architects wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of Ian Appleton, who sadly passed away last week.
Ian was an architect and teacher of distinction and as a collaborator with his wife, Marjorie, a personal friend of the practice. He is perhaps best known as being the architect for Leeds Playhouse and as a formative influence on the history and development of Little Sparta, concrete poet Ian Hamilton Findlay’s expansive sculptural garden work. He became the first chairman of The Little Sparta Trust when it was established in 1995.

He will be deeply missed, both in our practice and the wider Scottish architectural and arts community.
His family has asked that, instead of flowers, that all who wish to remember Ian donate instead to The Little Sparta Trust.
