Trossachs Steading

Living Spaces

Nestled within the grounds of a private estate in Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, this stand-alone stone structure has been sensitively restored and reimagined as a dual-purpose office and music studio.

The original stone walls were carefully retained and consolidated using lime mortar to preserve the building’s character and integrity. The selective removal of the east- and west-facing corners allowed the structure to open to its dramatic surroundings, creating expansive panoramic views that blur the boundary between indoors and nature.

The project's key feature is a new roof structure, constructed from a series of sustainably sourced FSC accredited European green oak timber. Each rafter was carefully selected and jointed using flitch plates at the apex, allowing for a completely open roof space that is free of tie beams or cross members. This approach not only emphasises the clean architectural lines and natural beauty of the exposed timber but also enables a heightened sense of clarity and calm within the interior space. The positioning of the rooflights was strategically designed to enhance the rhythm of the internal space and align seamlessly with the external zinc standing seams.

Interior timber elements, including custom furniture, were crafted by specialist cabinetmaker Colin Parker Furniture. Every detail was carefully considered to emphasise material honesty and longevity.

This project is a testament to how timber-led design and sensitive conservation can be used to revive historic and disused structures into contemporary, calm spaces.
