A carbon-neutral 5 bedroom house extension to a small stone but 'n' ben located in the Cairngorms National Park. Care has been taken to design the extension to complement its landscape setting and to not overpower the modest stone cottage.
The materials have been carefully selected to respect the cottage without mimicking it. They are locally sourced and the larch cladding has weathered silver grey to blend in the palette of the surrounding landscape.
The double aspect glazing of the kitchen link allows the cottage to be read in its original form and gives the occupants the full experience of the landscape and climate from the warmth of the house.
The house has been built using low carbon locally sourced non-toxic materials. The walls are softwood timber frame with green douglas fir frames in the kitchen link. Woodfibre insulation and high performance bespoke glazing exceed the building regulations. A wind turbine, solar panels and a ground source heat pump ensure that the house generates more energy than it uses.
