Helen Lucas Architects have realised a scheme of sensitive renovation, taking down an existing lean-to and replacing it with a smaller, well considered extension. This follows the characteristic and unique street pattern, addressing the side-street and enclosing a small, sheltered courtyard.

The extension’s traditional pitch and gable roof echoes the local vernacular, while vertical timber clad walls and a sinusoidal metal roof form a contemporary interpretation of the material palette. This balance of traditional and contemporary ensures that the extension sits in complimentary contrast to the original home, harmonising without pastiche.

Internally, careful positioning of a skylight in relation to the large sliding glazed doors sees a channel of light to pass through the space throughout the day, drawing the eye to the garden beyond.

Along with the new extension came an overhaul of the existing property’s insulation, improving its thermal performance, retaining breathability and ensuring the building fabric’s integrity. The property has also been fitted with an air-source heat pump to provide a sustainable heating solution.
